$.fn.obj.plugin "this" context

Hi There !

Is getting "this" in plugin2 and plugin3 to reference the same way as it does in plugin1 possible (and how) ?

(function($) {
$.fn.plugin1 = function() {
console.log(this);
};
$.fn.namespace = {
plugin2: function() {
console.log(this);
},
plugin3: function() {
console.log(this);
}
};
})(jQuery);

This come up every few months. It’s a JavaScript thing, not a jQuery thing.

The second and third this are $.fn.namespace. There’s no way around it.

Many plugins like jQuery UI - Tabs Demos & Documentation use a method string to get at the extra methods in the large plugin.

not content with that explanation, I wrote a little namespaced function collection that works.

(function ($) {
$.fn.plugin1 = function () {
console.log(this);
};
$.fn.namespace = function (subFunc) {
return ({
plugin2: function (num) {
console.log(this, num);
},
plugin3: function () {
console.log(this);
}
})[subFunc].apply(this, Array.prototype.slice.call(arguments, 1))
};
})(jQuery);
jQuery(function ($) {
$('body').namespace('plugin2', 34)
})

That's really neat, Jake. I've settled on just applying the namespace to the plugin with a prefix. nsPlugin1, nsPlugin2, etc... and will apply the argument method accessor route as described here http://docs.jquery.com/Plugins/Authoring for individual plugins. Applying an additional namespace layer will be too confusing.

You’ll probably write cleaner plugins taking the route you’ve chosen. I’ve never needed to use the style in the demo, and i’ve written hundreds of plugins.
