How to create a global function and store the return value in a variable.

Hi all, I am new to jQuery and this is my first post here. (:

I tried creating a global function to calculate the distance between 2 points.

jQuery.distance(p1, p2){

var dx = p2.x - p1.x;

var dy = p2.y - p1.y;

return Math.sqrt(dx^2 + dy^2);

};

Somewhere else within my code, I declare a new variable in order to store the value returned by the distance function.

var distance = $.distance(particle1, particle2);

However this is not working.

Any thoughts on how I could do something like this?

you haven't defined distance as a function

jQuery.distance=function(p1, p2){....

As the function has nothing to do with jQuery, why are you making it a jQuery property?

Secondly, ^ isn't a power operator, it's bitwise XOR.

Try this:

function distance( p1, p2 ) {
var dx = p2.x - p1.x, dy = p2.y - p1.y;
return Math.sqrt( dx * dx + dy * dy );
};

Thanks all,

I guess I have figured it out.

I tried defining a function initially but it did not work. (Should be typo error).

So I resort to extending jQuery. Adding a function on to that namespace.

It works as well.
