How to apply CSS to anchored element based on hash fragment

Hi, y'all.

I'm working on a Joomla website that uses anchors in the articles, each anchor accessible by clicking on the appropriate sub-menu item. The anchors work fine, but here's my problem:

The header is fixed and I can't figure out how to get each anchor point to fall below the fixed header (as opposed to the top of the window, behind the header).

Essentially, when I click on a sub-menu item, I need to be able to find the element on the page with an id that matches the url's hash fragment (e.g. hyyp://essiele-test-website.go/jq-test#how-to-do-it), then apply a margin-top CSS rule to that element.

Unfortunately, the site isn't live... so I can't post the url for you to see. But any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok... just tried .split('#')... this gives me an array containing two values, the second being the hash fragment.

That's definitely going in the right direction! Now all I need to do is find the element on the page that matches the second value in the array and apply the required CSS to it (probably using .addClass).
