Now, this seems a pretty 'cludgy' conversion. Is there a more elegant way to code this??

Means you had a string.

var ll=s.match(/\-?\d+\.\d+/g).map(parseFloat), lat=ll[0],lng=ll[1];

Next time share exactly what the console.log returned. I can't see how your code would work without losing LOTS of accuracy.

Wait a minute you don't have a string, so my last solutions will not work. you have some kind of object like

{lat: 46.05734091267766100,lng:-114.173083371296539075}

You want location.lat and location.lng

Show us the code you have that deals with "a google map listener event" (which one?)

Google Maps doesn't give you strings for positions. It gives you nice, neat objects containing floats for coordinates.

You probably turned it into a string at some point!

But still guessing, since you have shown us so little code.

You can INITIALIZE a LatLng with either two values or an object like {lat: 1.23, lng: 4.56} (which google calls a LatLng Object Literal). But when GM gives you a position, it gives it to you as a LatLng Object (not Object Literal), which has member functions for retrieving the parts.

Once you have a LatLng object (which is what Google Maps will give you when you retrieve a position member of some object you got from a callback, etc. you use .lat() and .lng() to retrieve them.

If you've take what you got and transformed it into something else, all bets are off, since we don't know what you did.

Google like making a lot of little objects inside of objects.

var ll=new google.maps.LatLng(-53.1525247, -70.9101868) // use LatLng to make a location…

console.log(ll.lat(), ll.lng() , ll.toString() ) // lat, lng, and the string format.

JSON.stringify automatically takes the string format, so it is just wrong.

"(-53.1525247, -70.9101868)" is their string format.

Well, I have to apologize for causing all the mystery about my code. Here it is below:

Again, another apology: I tried to use location.lat to get the lat instead of location.lat(). Of course it didn't work and off I went in the wrong direction. I'm modifying code found in books like "Getting Around with Google Maps" by John Sly to learn how to program the GM Api. Plus trying to digest the GM Api documentation itself.

Thanks for your time on this. I did learn some other things by looking at your comments. Among others, 'location' is just a parameter (event.latlng) passed to the function addMarker().

I learned about it by setting up a page with

var ll=new google.maps.LatLng(-53.1525247, -70.9101868)

Then I checked it out in the web console.

I found ll.lat is a function.

I found ll is a classic Object.

I found that ll when converted to a string adds those pesky parentheses around the lat/lng!

It's great to read the docs, but it's also great to play with your data with the dev tools.
