That code would invite hackers. The old ajax requests are stored in the browser. If I leave and someone else comes around, they can find my password.

Would setting cache to false in AJAX setup fix it?
$.ajaxSetup({ cache: false });
If not, can you point me towards the correct way?

That wouldn’t help much. If you need to use AJAX, you need to go to another page after they have successfully logged in.
