Is this a simpler way to write this jQuery?

Using jQuery

I'm trying to grok some legacy code and am a little confused by this:
var resultsText = jQuery.trim($("#spanNumberOfResults").text());
Would or would not this do the same thing, and be more readable:
var resultsText = $("#spanNumberOfResults").text().trim();
?

The second version would require that String have a prototype method trim. It is a
new
method that IE8 does not have.
If you don't care about IE8. Go for it. jQuery.trim was added so that trimming can be done on all platforms.

Yes, they should end up with the same result. One may be faster than the other depending on implementation.
Keep in mind it may have been done the way it was because there has been a trim method in jQuery longer than there has been one in javascript.
