John,
you and all the jQuery team members are always at the top of
innovation.
It is not easy for a framework like jQuery and with its audience to
continuously add new features and improvements without breaking
previous code base. But you just can do it so well !!! :-)

I just read the release info and changes and I must say I'm impressed
and pleased in equal measure. I'm a Perl hacker who came to jQuery
because I find its syntax natural and it reminds me of Perl in that
you can code how you think. I am amazed that the kit/community is
doing so many things so right (like opening the selector engine).
I was starting to look at ExtJS for some bigger projects but the way
things are going I'd rather take the time to write a plugin or two
with jQuery for anything that I would have wanted from ExtJS.
...just three years. Terrific.

Okay, I get what you're saying. But I don't understand why you think
jQuery needs to modify its code significantly.
Right now, as per John, jQuery does:
if supports_standards:
use_standards
else:
use alt_method
The only change that needs to happen to support your point is to
replace the default else with a more explicit else if, and repeat ad
infinitum until all alternate methods are exhausted. It's not all
that big a change or shift in code.
However, unless I'm misunderstanding your point, in terms of the end
result, your approach is mostly equivalent to the current approach.
In both cases, if none of the alternate methods work and the standard
method doesn't work, things break.
In your case, it breaks because none of the conditionals match. In
the current case, it breaks because the alternate method doesn't work.

Could anyone explain this statement on the wiki page?
"You should always be sure to run your page in standards mode. There
are
known issues with methods not working correctly in quirks
mode (including errors in the selector engine in Safari). "
Is there a list of the known issues somewhere? (I browsed the bug
tracker but it's difficult to find things).
It's not always possible to run pages in standards mode. If jQuery 1.3
will break my quirks pages, I need to know what to look for.

I have had a few projects where the HTML was not 100% under my own control
and couldn't run in standards mode.
However, in those situations, I did NOT promise the client full
compatibility across all major browsers.
If this was an issue with the client, I demanded either control over the
HTML or for the HTML writer to add the correct DOCTYPES to enforce standards
mode.
I would recommend this approach for so many, many, many reasons.

That tests must be in average. I made some test on .class selectors
and it showed 25x faster.
