it says "minified and gzipped" on front page

You can get a gzipped version from Microsoft or Google CDN:

http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/jquery/jquery-1.4.2.min.js

http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js

Most of the time the server does the gzipping when it sends out the file. Not all servers gzip their content, and most only gzip text files since files like jpg or gif are already compressed.

I download the file but it was still 70kb.

Like Dave said gzips are done by server. So I tried directly linking the jquery file from the google to my website

Now the website runs faster and the jquery file that my website uses is 24kb. I tested it from http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/

PS. Jquery file from MS was something like 32kb. So i would rather use the google's
