jQuery and iframes

I am using a menu system that slides down from a button below the logo. Once the button is clicked, the iframe that contains the menu slides down and displays all the links. The iframe is coming from a file that is within my root folder. All the links within the iframe menu system, open in a new tab.
My question. I want the original start page to close the iframe window after any of the links inside the iframe window are clicked. I can get this to work, if the menu system is within the start page with no iframe. However, not with the iframe.
If anybody can shed light on this problem, it would be greatly appreciated.
