jQuery examples don't work when running on my localhost

Hi all, new here.
I'm working through the examples in the API section, and though they work fine from the jquery.com website, when I copy an example (demo) and store it locally, it will load into my browser, but it will not do anything when I click on an element. For example the click demo. Is there some wrapper I have to put around the code to make it work? I have jQuery code examples from wrox that work fine, so I don't think it's my local configuration that's at fault. Windows 7, Firefox, XAMPP.
