why use png for gradients?

the links don't work anymore..

png gradients are faster than CSS gradients in most browsers.

I've been adapting some of the CSS from the open-source HackerNews Mobile app project into my app. The author wanted to emulate the iOS native look as precisely as possible, and also efficiently. It's not a jQuery Mobile project, but I've been able to use bits and pieces.
