It would have to do with response time as well. The browsers don't have access to much in the way of memory and I have noticed that the iPod touch does tend to be slower than other devices. So I am not suprised that it would be painfully slow on a site with that much loaded.

Sorry....I meant 100KB. The concept is to try and keep as close to this number as possible understanding that jQuery alone is close to 90kb. But ultimately, you should rely heavily on minification to try to get as close as possible. Also, size on disk does not always translate to size of transfer. You should try and use some http tracing utility like the one that comes with chrome and safari or Firebug. These will give you an idea of actual transfer size.
