Hey Everyone -
So we're in the progress of setting up the new jQuery Forum (as you can see here). We're moving away from using Google Groups, due to the excessive problems that we've had with it. On top of this we see an opportunity to combine some of the disparate jQuery discussion communities (namely the jQueryHelp.com forum).
We analyzed a number of forum solutions and so far we've found Zoho Discussions to be far and away the best. Not only that but the Zoho team has been incredibly accommodating - even going so far as to import all the old jQueryHelp.com and Google Groups posts.
At the time of this post all the old jQueryHelp.com posts and users have been imported into the system. By the end of this weekend the Google Groups (jquery-en, jquery-dev, and jquery-ui) posts and users will be moved over as well. The transition will certainly be rocky but we hope to push through so that we can have an excellent discussion solution in the end.
You'll not that the forum (at this time) isn't styled particularly like the jQuery site. We'll be working to fix this and should have it looking right by the end of the weekend.
We're going to have a full post announcing the forum on Monday, once everything is imported and the site looks correct. Thanks again everyone for your patience and feedback and here's to an exciting 2010!

Hi
Nice initiative,
Just wanted to let you know that I have visited this site with; ie, firefox, chrome and safari and each and every browser is warning me about this site being unsafe to enter....something about the certificate this site is using.
You guys may wanna look into it.
Take care.
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

It sounds like this may be due to the https:// not currently being set up correctly - we're working to fix this - hopefully by the end of the weekend. In the meantime just using http://forum.jquery.com/ should be sufficient.

Same issue as sammir, in Chrome 4. But it seems you already know about it. Good riddance google groups!

I can't sign-in using Safari either. I think it's something to do with how webkit handles cross-domain cookies.
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

I just tried it and I can confirm - I get a weird cookie error. I'll let the Zoho team know right away. Keep the feedback coming, thanks everyone!

I really love this forum.
But the german translation of the application is bad.
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

@milchi: Can you expand on problems with the German translation? I can pass it along to the Zoho team.
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum
In fact, the German translation is poorly executed, misleading or typo-ridden for the bigger part of it, sometimes to the extent of being erroneous.

FINALLY. Not my first choice of forum software, but at least its not a discussion group.. With jQuery being the leader of the javascript frameworks, I could never understand why their support was back in 1980.... groups died the day the first forum was invented. Now we may all finally get the answers we've been looking for straight from the source
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

Er, what exactly is a "discussion group"? Do you mean Usenet? Call me a retro grouch, but frankly if it ain't broke...
Anyway, if this group format works for all those interested, so be it.

just something i've wondered about, doesn't zoho community cost per month to have a basic package? wouldn't it better to have a annually subscribable service that doesn't impose restrictions on your own hosting or a open source software instead?
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum
One of the points that we considered when looking at forum solutions was how hard it was going to be to get things fixed/changed if we wanted that to happen. With nearly every solution we would have to find and pay someone to make that happen (we don't particularly have a staff of skilled Vanilla Forum experts of PHPBB experts on hand - we do JavaScript).
Second, we had to consider how easy it would be to gets changes made if we wanted them (assuming we went with a closed solution). A few companies contacted us offering solutions - but Zoho in particular was very hospitable to making changes to the site, importing existing data, and other large-scale things. Additionally they are giving us this forum unlimited and completely for free - we are very gracious and pleased with their hospitality.
At the moment Zoho Discussions is very close to what we want feature-wise there are a few bug fixes that need to get resolved though before we fully launch (which is a far cry from needing large-scale features written to power the site). I hope to post more updates as we hear back from the Zoho team.

I have never heard about Zoho. But it looks great. Definitively, the forum will help both experts and beginners and also will provide a way to stay-in-contact with other folks around the world.
Just a note, when I have subscribed to the feed (http://forum.jquery.com/feed) via Google Reader, the title was "Zoho Discussions". I think it should be something like "jQuery forums".

In certain browsers, if you click "Reply to this topic" without being signed in, it pulls down the reply form, but then covers the page with a gray div. This is happening in Chrome and Safari on both Windows and Mac. In IE8 the form loads, but the browser's loading bar keeps going like it's hung up on something. It's fine in Firefox 3.5.
Also, the file attachment functionality doesn't seem to be working - it just hangs with the loading spinner (Chrome Mac).

Re: New jQuery Forum

A JQuery Forum is a sensational idea! I was shocked when I found there wasn't one.
I really think using this forum software is a mistake, but it's better than a newsgroup.
You have to enable third-party cookies in order to sign in, it looks like. That's a major flaw, in my opinion. I don't see where you can subscribe to a forum or to a thread, either, both of which are essential to a good forum, but maybe that's going to be fixed with the other issues mentioned above?
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum
you can "follow" threads and forums but i agree i don't like the software all that much mostly because it doesn't do topic marking so its near impossible to figure out what you've replied to and not and which have new replies. Its a great hinderance. Also not sure why theres a need to do a ajax loading on the forum view, bit of an overkill.
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

I agree with you on all points, jaggi_2005. The AJAX loading is especially annoying when you're trying to pop links in a new tab.you can "follow" threads and forums but i agree i don't like the software all that much mostly because it doesn't do topic marking so its near impossible to figure out what you've replied to and not and which have new replies. I like phpBB's "follow" implementation: you could set your preferences to automatically follow any thread you post to, but could override it on a thread-by-thread basis.
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum
Hi,
The issue related to third party cookie has been fixed. Thanks for your patience.
You can follow any topic,forum,sub-forum & user in Zoho Discussions and unlike phpBB, you can manage all the items you follow in the "My Area" section. In addition to following a topic, you can also bookmark a topic in Zoho Discussions.
To follow a topic: Use the "Follow this topic" link available in the sidebar under '"Post actions".
To follow a forum/sub-forum: Go to any particular forum/sub-forum. Use the "Follow <forum name>" link available in the sidebar under "Forum actions".
To follow an user: Go to any user's profile. Use the "Follow user" link available below the user's photo.
To bookmark a topic: Use the "Bookmark this topic" link available in the sidebar under "Post actions".
Hope this helps.

@rajaram: I appreciate you trying to help, but that's not what I was talking about. I don't want to follow a whole forum, or have to manually click follow on each post I reply to. In phpBB they had a user setting that allowed you to automatically follow any topic you start or reply to, along with the option to disable it on a post-by-post basis. That way you're only getting notifications for topics you choose to be active about.

The constant AJAX loaders definitely do begin to grate on the nerves...
More annoying to me so far is a strange issue I have encountered when using multiple code blocks in the same post. At least in Chrome, the RTE tends to start putting strange horizontal scrollbars and changing the text style. Starts to feel like fighting with MS Word, where the editor just doesn't want to let you put your cursor where you want and type.
Perhaps I should be reporting this in some Zoho support forum? Let me know, Dhan.
Here is a screenshot of what it starts to look like. Here is a permalink to a post I made in which this happened. Note the nested scrollbars and weird inner scrolling that happens in between the two code blocks.

It's a shame the old phpBB jqueryhelp.com forums disappeared. This Zolo thing is just as bad as Google Groups IMO, but with more intrusive AJAX.
Also I cannot work out how to change my username! I didn't even get to choose one, it was just pre-allocated I think
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

Hi,
What issues are you facing with this forum? The user names were ported from the old system and unless they were taken, your name was preserved.
You can always create a new Zoho Id and start posting using that id.

Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

Maybe those of us who were ported over from jQuery Help could be given one username change? This would allow those who had their usernames changed with the move to be able to select something more suitable than the automated ones. I'm not sure if that's possible on Zoho's end, but I'm sure many users would appreciate it.
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

What issues are you facing with this forum?
It might not be issues with the forum so much that there are many of us who are simply used to more "traditional" style forums such as phpBB and vbulletin, just as there are people who strongly prefer newsgroups over discussion boards.
However, there are a number of things that could be improved on, some of which are mentioned in this thread like the excessive AJAX links. There are some usability issues too, like not being able to easily quote a post with one click; code snippets rendering as lists, making it difficult to modify examples and paste them back; signatures getting embedded into a post instead of being "sticky" and displaying after it, so if a link in your signature becomes outdated and you need to change it, you'd have to go back and edit every single one of your previous posts. Most of these things have been reported to Zoho already, but I wanted to give some examples to answer your question.
Hopefully once things start to smooth out people will become more accustomed to it, but inevitably there are going to be users like batfastad1 and myself who simply prefer other forum software.

I'm in the same boat with the user name.. It keeps insisting that I'm micah.jquery1 which is frustrating that I've changed my information on my account, but it doesn't seem to propagate the change to this forum... I'm up for using a this if it's a better system, but come on Zoho, don't give me an option to make a change that doesn't really make a change! I would like to add, that starting a new account in place of the one that's already setup, not acceptable to me.

screenshot1: screenshot2: Though follow/disable is available on a post-by-post basis, managing the list of followed topics is made easier here. You can go to "My Area >> Watchlist" to disable all the notifications from a single screen.
@ mikebranski: Though there is no user settings that allow you to automatically follow any topic you start, Zoho Discussions provides this as an default option on a post-by-post basis. You can decide to follow/disable while posting a topic using the check-box "Notify me when a response is made"(screenshot1). In addition to this, you can opt to follow/disable directly from the topics started by you using the check-box "Notify me on response" (screenshot2). @rajaram: I appreciate you trying to help, but that's not what I was talking about. John, you should of tried the Wildcat! Internet Net Server, one of the early pioneers in mail/file hosting systems since the 80s. Multi-device interface, not just the web; TRUE offline mail system, RFC mail readers, GUI interface, Console Interface even dialup if you need that. :) plus with its hallmark File Library Storage system, account/access GROUP based security system, expiration system, subscription system, AVS system, even a ListServer if you need it! 250 API system in all major languages, builtin-PHP system, WCX (Wildcat! Basic) Embedded language support. jQuery is also part of the package used for the mail tipster Popup Display. We are currently adding 3rd mail display format for users to use - this stupid blog topical dump style. People want it but it doesn't beat our classic system in GETTING people their mail and following the post/reply system.
Anyway, looks like you are your way with ZoHo. I'm sure it will do that job for want you want.

Well, I'm unimpressed with Zoho, so far. As I move around, the menu/navigation options change drastically. There seems to be no consistency. Very confusing. Additionally, although there seems to be a way to add a group and manage groups you belong to via your profile, I can't see how to do it. There is a way to create a brand new group, but I can't see how to add one to my profile. I've tried from that profile page and from the JQuery group page. So far, so bad.
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

Hi russcampbell,
I am not sure I understand your issue well - to suggest a way around or even figure out if it qualifies as a feature that we can throw in. I will be much obliged if you take your time to explain.
Here is what I understood - You are unable to find out how to "become" a member of one of the groups - like jQuery UI or jQuery-en. In the new jQuery portal, you do not need to become a member of each of these groups to read / respond. All you need is a Zoho (or Google / Google Apps / Yahoo!) id to login and then you can post away. You can also follow / bookmark your interest areas (as explained here ) and receive updates in your email.
Hope this clarifies your actual question. If not, please fire away and we will be more than eager to solve your issues.

Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

Zoho Discussions has a "Follow" feature. You can follow topics, people, entire forums and sub-forums. It is really up to you. When you follow a topic - you get "as it happens" notification (no digests yet).
The Follow feature also gives you an "yellow" notification band on the side bar AND has an entire My Watchlist page that lets you keep abreast of what is happening in areas you are interested in.
If you would rather not be bothered by email notifications and would prefer to view them in the "My Watchlist" area, then choose the "bookmark" option instead of "follow". You can bookmark topics only.

My suggestions to this changing phase...
I received the email about the change, informed my login at Zoho and clicked the "I forgot my password". This is strange because I didn't forgot it, I don't even remember having an Zoho account. It would be nicer if I received an link in my email that could redirect me to the page where I setup an password, or vinculate my login with an existing zoho account.
Then I created my account at Zoho and when I click at "Groups", it says "You're not in any groups"... Hey, I just got an email telling me that I already was in JQuery Forum... this sounds strange to me.
Well, besides these little problems, this UI seems to be far away better than Google groups... that UI really sucks.
Congratulations!

Re: New jQuery Forum

Right place to give my first impression I guess.
I find the general feel of Zoho a bit messy as in "all over the place", if you see what I mean, but I think it could be fixed with proper styling (including scaling down size dramatically -- including fonts and paragraph separations). Somehow, I feel like being in a candy box as it is now and it doesn't really suit the minimalist approach I generally associate to jQuery.
I dunno about functionalities but I admit I was completely lost at first. "Sub-forums" don't seem to be clearly separated (and I really appreciated the fact I had jquery-dev and only jquery-dev in my gmail inbox). I'm guessing it's just a question of configuration and getting used to it but, while I appreciate the automatic imports the Zoho guys provided (and oh is it a nightmare sometimes), I would have preferred to have access to jquery-dev only at first then be given the possibility to add more categories/sub-forums... not being forced into seeing everything at once.
The constant ajax polling is a bit annoying but I can understand why it happens.
So-so for me right now but, then again, it's like an entire new world.

I'm not sure if it's a Zoho issue, or a per-forum setting, but we could really use some kind of pagination for long posts. This thread's a great testament to that - it gets pretty messy having 60+ replies all on one page.
Also, it'd be nice to be able to jump to the last page from the thread listing page. That way we wouldn't have to scroll through all the replies we've already read.

I think for the most part, it should take some getting used to, and a few notification changes on the part of the Zoho guys.
However, I just had to say that I'm _very_ impressed by the generous donation that the ZOHO peeps have made and their willingness to support our community. Several of their guys are already here fixing problems for us in real time. _That_ is invaluable, and something that probably wouldn't have been possible with an open-source install, or on google groups. So props to the zoho guys that are in here fixing stuff for us!
If I may add, after making a few code replies to questions in the forum I've noticed two things:
Syntax highlighting of any sort would be very helpful. I don't think it would have to be anything too intense, but something similar to the syntax highlighting of code on StackOverflow would be quite sufficient. It's just tough to go through code at times when its all black and grey.
I hate when I accidentally press `enter` twice. I end up with two code blocks that I have to merge together by backspacing in each individual line until I reach the end of the code block. Might I suggest that we have some sort of shorthand for saying "Make this into a code block when I press submit" that could also be used to add code references inline. One of the best features of stackoverflow is the ability to add backticks to variable names inline (e.g. `$.ajax()`) and have it format like code.
I would venture to guess that the biggest issues that we're going to have with this forum will probably revolve around the fact that we have a lot of code to post, so making that function easy to use and very bug-free is probably going to be a key to acceptance.
Thanks again! Nice Move!

P.S. When I previewed this message, I noticed that the message shown to me was "This is preview!" - and while I guess, is probably valid, it seems like it should probably be "This is a preview!" - not a huge deal though...

I've tried for at least one hour now, and I can't find out how to follow a topic.
And the bookmark link doesn't seem to do anything at all.
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

I also noticed that the bookmark feature does: absolutely nothing
My only complaint so far is the pain to scroll through topics..... this one is currently 70 posts and i had already read 50 or so of them that existed last night, it was quite the pain in the a__ to find post #51 to pick up the conversation where i left off...
I look forward to using the "code block" feature... that alone will offset many annoyances of this forum engine.... but anything was better than the Google Group IMHO...

A number of the actions in the Post Actions box seem to be broken, as of earlier this evening. I was able to do a Move Topic earlier, but clicking it now seems to do nothing. The follow topic, lock topic, move topic, amongst other links, all seem to do absolutely nothing when clicked.
Also, since this is the new jQuery support forum, we should probably recommend to the Zoho folks that they shouldn't be using <a href="javascript:;" />, which is on all the links in this troublesome panel

clicking around this forum led me to this small issue: goto the forum home page, scroll all the way down, click on 'scott.gonzalez' link on the right, what for pointless ajax request to complete, and notice you find yourself looking in the middle of a content section. in other word the document does not scroll to the top on request completion. (OSX10.6 FF3.6)
the RTE could also do with a 'remove format' button
i've read this thread with amazement. i struggle to understand the reasoning behind the decision to use this software. (zoho corp sound like a good bunch, it's just the software i'm referring to). i feel compelled to express my opinion, because the jquery team do take on board the opinions and feedback of the community.
very interested to hear others' opinions as they arrive on this forum

it looks nice but it seems to be on maintenance very frequently.
Is this the issue with the forum or the server?
Thanks

I can't seem to find view "new" post. It is time saver! Otherwise as forum grow it is hard on the finger to scroll the mouse to look for new post in the thread.

not sure what they've done but now ( in IE8 at least ), the back buttons now require 3 clicks to go back, maybe a couple iframes somewhere? i must say i agree with the people saying that there's too much ajax and clicking to browse this new forum.
didn't know where else to put this post, so if it's in the wrong place i apologize.

Some other forum software has the option to list posts in reverse-chron order, It makes finding the newer post a bit easier, but some don't like it because of the unatural reading order. A button, or option, to skip posts already read would go a long way towards resolving the long-page issues that seem to be quite predominate here.

How do I change my password? I hate confusing websites that force me to post questions like this - poor usability! Form over function.

What's the goal time-wise to get posts moderated around here? There are posts from 5 hours ago that are still "Awaiting Moderation"
Re: Re: New jQuery Forum

ASAP, just remember the moderators are still getting their feet wet with the new system and we are bringing kinks to the forefront of the developers. It'll get better over time.
Thanks for your patience.

I'm wondering the same thing myself.
I created a post two days ago, and it's still awaiting moderation

Good Job! Waited long for this step.
If you could make discussions out of the API comments - which you can track here in forum or under a function in API - that would be great!

Re: New jQuery Forum RSS feed

The RSS feed lists one entry for every *reply* instead of the standard one entry for every *topic*. It makes it tough to follow with my feed reader.

Is anyone else having the issue that "Keep me signed in" doesn't do anything? I know it's just not this computer as I am on one of three computers at any given time, and none of them "remember" me as logged in....
I've already had two replies I made showing "guest" because I hadn't realized that I wasn't remembered upon returning to the forum

I think any type of bulletin board functionality over google groups is great. It will just take some getting used to.
Some thoughts:
The one thing that is incredibly annoying though is that "Loading" animation. It is sort of nice for leaving replies but when opening a post..... lose the animation and just open the page.
RTE always seems to add one space at the begining of the reply. (FF3.5)
If you hit enter it formats as a double space in the RTE but is formatted as a single space in the post.
Might be nice when a post is edited it should say, "Lasted edited on: date/time". Make it easier to understand when someone quotes text but it is different in the original post. Very low priority.

I think the new forum is fantastic. Every project I've been involved in that had a Google Groups list has seen it turn into a ghost town, with only the occasional spam tumbleweed rolling through. This is a refreshing change -- thanks for getting it set up.
I notice that the RSS feed generates a new item for any new reply, to any topic, globally. The volume of updates makes it, well... not particularly useful. It'd be really nice to see that expanded.
I'll also echo alexandre3's sentiment -- it would be really nice if, since this will mainly be a help/advice forum, there was a quick and easy way to get a list of unanswered questions to skim through for ones you might be able to help with.
As for all the chatter about the AJAX loading GIF... I guess it just really doesn't bother me. Maybe it'll start to annoy me in time ;-)

I too found that this forum changed my username when it moved over from Google Groups. I tried editing my account settings but there's no way to change the display name. I hope this gets changed soon.

I am not able to create new post. Publish button simply does not do anything. None of the button fire - I am on Ubuntu with Firefox and Chrome. Both browsers fail.
