Newsticker to fetch data from mysql

Hi,

there are many great newsticker plugins available, but all of them seem to work with xml data. I'm looking for a way, to show the latest entries in a mysql database.

the ticker should display the last 4 news and look for newer entries every few seconds.

eg:

entry 4

entry 3

entry 2

entry 1

when there is an entry 5, entry 1 should disappear by scrolling.

I hope someone can point me in the right direction or maybe there is even a plugin that works with mysql.

All you need to do is the replace the 'XML ajax read' with a 'SCRIPT ajax read'; your script should read the latest 4 news items and display them.

ok thank you for your tip. are there such scripts availble somewhere maybe? i will take a look at the ticker plugins, which can handle XML. any suggestions?

I assume you already have a MySQL db and a web server that supports PHP. The script you need depends so much on your news database table design.

You can learn how to connect to mysql in PHP here: http://www.w3schools.com/php/php_mysql_connect.asp

Then you will need to write SQL to fetch the news items you need and output them.

yes i already have the infrastructure. my news just have an id and are a simple 3-4 words text. i'm following this tutorial here: http://openenergymonitor.org/emon/node/107

the db connect already works. now i have to figure out, how to get the latest entries and how to do the refresh it, without reloading the site.

baby steps... :)
