Select menu placeholder not working?

Hi,

I have tried to get the placeholder to show by the code provided but it no matter what I do it will not show even using the demo code found on site. I am running xcode 4 with a phonegap project and iPad simulator. Even on Safari I don't get the placeholder it is still a checkbox. Any ideas?
