Hi Cris,
Sortable is very unstable (read: not working). I would love to use it
too, but atm the interface sortable is a more reliable plugin.

We welcome the help. Sending an email to this list (as you've done) is a good way to always
reach the right person/people. Some of us hang out in #jquery-ui as well, documenting any important discussions/decisions there back to this list.
Looking at the roadmap, Paul's name is next to sortable floats and mine
is next to sortable trees. I just wrote the first version of tree last
weekend:

Note: No drag/drop mouse support (yet), just keyboard.
I haven't looked at the sortable code yet to see how we'll
combine/connect these two. There's going to be some overlap with
selectables as well (again keyboard and mouse). If no one beats me to it, my plan is to look at the code for both sortables and selectables, document the API
on the wiki, complete the demo/test pages, and see what else needs to
be done.
