Try using the latest revision of ui.sortable.js from SVN. No copy action is done there anymore, so it might work better.

Thanks for the suggestion, Paul. I built the latest SVN code but it's
still not working in IE.

Don't know what it is then - maybe add a bug report, though debugging will be difficult for me.
