Hi,
I realize I'm a few months late but I just saw your post.  I'm using SF and yes it does carry bg images.  I hope you've already found that it does but in case you didn't...
Right now I'm trying to find out if it can carry different images when different Joomla articles are on screen and can it handle sprites.

menu is made of html and css, use whatever you want. You could add different classes to menu based on some trigger ?? to tell it what version you want and build a set of css rules accordingly

Do you know of an example (site) where SF handles sprites?
I know it can do png, jpg bgs but ...

I'm still trying to get this to work, I know my CSS is OK (or at least I think so)
I used to have SF parents paired up with 4 state jpgs  and subs with 4 state pngs, all this worked fine.
Now I'm trying this with only 2 png sprites (1 parent, 1 subs), using basically the same CSS only slightly re-adjusted for new pic dimensions but nothing shows up, when I hover over the link only an outline shows up..

i tried searching for +superfish +sprites, haven't found anything inspiring

sprite issue really has nothing to do with superfish, it is all css

are you trying to sprite backgrounds or inside the anchor elements?

can you provide a link? would likely find issue pretty quick
