What happens when it just doesn't work?

My syntax is correct, I've linked all the scripts I need to, I've done this exact setup on a previous project, using the same code and the same plugins but this time it fails.

No mis-highlighting in Notepad++, no Firebug report, no IE error, no functionality, no odd behaviour. Nothing. It's as if the javascript doesn't even load with the page.

I'm gonna throw this wide open because I just don't have a clue! :(

How isn't it working? You need to describe the problem and what is failing. Your sad story, while evocative, is not descriptive.

Ah, I figured the link to the source would be enough.

OK.

I'm linking in jQuery and the Validator plugin by Jörn Zaefferer. Both sit in a subdirectory called scripts.

There are two scripts in the html file also: the Google Analytics code, which sits outside the document.ready function, and the validation code, which is straight copy/pasted from a previous working page.

The form on the page is also identical (#emailForm).

It seems whining about the problem allowed me to go away and come back refreshed, and so I discovered that the Validator plugin relies on the " name='' " attribute to function, which doesn't validate in W3C. I guess I'll have a dig through the plugin and see if I can get it to reference the ID instead.

Do you have any opinion on that?

You also should verify that you are including Google Analytics properly and according to their documentation. It seems you have some things in not-the-right-order.

I've never actually used validate, but I've seen a tonne of people use it, and I was under the impression that you use .validate() to set up the rules, and then you call .valid() inside of a form submit method, and that's how the actual checking gets done.

That's how you validate on submit. Using the validate function in the head, attached to the name "emailForm" allows the plugin to validate on the fly too. Refresh now and see. I put the "name" attribute in for each element and it works. Annoyingly.
